Custom Metal Awnings & Canopies in Kelowna and the Okanagan

Hand-Crafted Standing Seam Awnings, Built to Fit

A good awning shades a hot west-facing window in July, keeps rain and snow off your front step in January, and finishes off a plain wall. I build custom standing seam metal awnings and canopies for homes in Kelowna and across the Okanagan. Each one is made to your exact measurements, and I install it myself.

I’m Jared Hanson, an RCABC-trained journeyman architectural sheet metal worker. I put the same materials and the same care into an awning that I put into a full standing seam metal roof, so the finished piece looks like it was always part of the house.

Standing Seam Metal Awnings Built to Match Your Home

Most awnings you see are fabric or a stock kit. Mine are hand-crafted standing seam metal, the same style of panel I use on roofs. That matters when you’re comparing metal awnings: Kelowna summers are hard on fabric, and our winters bring real snow. Here’s what you get:

  • Clean lines that match a standing seam roof, or a sharp metal accent on a home with shingles, stucco or other siding
  • No fabric to fade, tear or replace every few years
  • A durable surface that sheds rain and snow
  • A size and shape built to your exact specifications, not picked from a catalogue

Because every awning is made to fit, it can follow the shape of a bay window, line up with your trim, or match the slope of the main roof.

Window Awnings, Door Canopies and Entry Overhangs

Here are some of the shapes I build. If you have something else in mind, send me a photo or a sketch.

Flat and shed-style window awnings

A crisp, low-slope awning over a window or a row of windows. It cuts direct sun, keeps rain off the glass and the sill, and looks modern, especially in black or a dark colour against light siding.

Curved and bell-style awnings

Curved standing seam awnings and bay window roofs take more skill to form and fit, so they’re worth having built by someone who works with sheet metal every day. They suit heritage, Tudor and craftsman-style homes.

Door canopies and entry overhangs

A canopy over the front door or a side entrance keeps you dry while you find your keys, protects the door from the weather, and makes the entry feel finished. I can also clad an entry gable or overhang in metal so it ties into the rest of the exterior.

I build awnings and canopies for both residential and commercial buildings, and large projects are welcome. No problem is unresolvable.

Built for Okanagan Sun, Snow and Wind

Our weather is hard on exterior details. Summers are hot and sunny, winters bring heavy snow, and some lots get strong wind off the lake. I build every awning with all of that in mind:

  • Summer shade. An awning over a south- or west-facing window blocks the high summer sun before it hits the glass, which helps keep rooms cooler.
  • Snow and rain. Standing seam metal sheds water and snow, and I pitch and flash the awning so water runs away from the wall, not into it. If an awning sits under a metal roof edge, snow retention above it is worth a look.
  • Wind. Every awning is fastened properly to the building so it stays put. For big awnings and canopies, the framing and brackets are designed by an engineer. I can build the framing for small ones myself, and sometimes a carpenter is the better choice for the job.
  • Low maintenance. No fabric, no stain, no repainting. I build awnings in 24 gauge painted steel, or in copper or zinc at an equivalent weight: typically 16 oz or 20 oz architectural copper, or zinc around 0.7 to 0.8 mm thick.

Colours and Finishes

An awning can match your roof exactly, or it can be a deliberate contrast. Black and charcoal awnings are popular on modern farmhouse and contemporary homes, and warmer tones work well with wood and stone. I’ll bring samples so you can see the colour against your siding in daylight. Painted steel colours come from the Cascadia Metals colour chart in SMP and PVDF paint systems, and copper and zinc are options too.

How a Custom Awning Project Works

  1. On-site consultation. I come out, look at the window or entry, talk about what you want (shade, rain cover, looks, or all three) and take measurements.
  2. Design. We settle on the shape, size, slope and colour. I’ll tell you honestly what will work and what won’t.
  3. Fabrication. I form the panels and trim to fit your opening, in my shop and on site.
  4. Installation. I install the awning myself, including the flashing where it meets the wall, so water stays out.
  5. Clean-up and walk-through. I clean up after myself and walk you through the finished work.

Awnings for New Builds and Renovations

If you’re building new, an awning is easiest to plan before the siding goes on, so the flashing and attachment points can be built in properly. I’m happy to work with your builder or general contractor. Adding an awning to an existing home is common too, and it’s one of the simplest ways to change how the front of a house looks. It also pairs well with new metal siding.

Why Local Homeowners Choose Me

Jared Hanson, RCABC-trained journeyman sheet metal worker, wearing his tool belt
  • I do the work myself. I measure, design, build and install your awning. No crew rotating through your job.
  • RCABC-trained journeyman. My apprenticeship covered architectural sheet metal and building envelope systems, so the awning is flashed and attached properly, not just hung on the wall.
  • It will match your roof. I also install standing seam metal roofing, so an awning from me can use the same panel look and colour as your roof.
  • Custom, not catalogue. Every awning is built to your exact specifications.
  • Upfront and honest. Clear pricing, realistic timelines, and a clean site when I’m done.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a metal awning handle Okanagan snow?

Yes, when it’s designed and attached properly for its size. Standing seam metal sheds snow well. For big awnings and canopies, an engineer designs the framing and brackets.

Can you match my existing metal roof?

Usually, yes. If you have a standing seam roof, I can build an awning with the same look and, in most cases, a matching colour. Send me the colour name if you have it, or I can check it on site.

Can you add an awning to my house if I don’t have a metal roof?

Yes. Metal awnings look great on homes with shingle roofs, stucco or wood siding. A lot of people use a black or dark metal awning as a contrast accent.

Do I need a permit for an awning in Kelowna?

It depends on the size, the design and your municipality. Small window awnings often don’t, while larger structural canopies may. Permits are the customer’s responsibility, so check with the City of Kelowna or your local municipality before we start.

How long does it take to get a custom awning?

It depends on the design and the time of year. Lead times are longer in the busy season. I’ll give you a realistic timeline when I quote.

How much does a custom metal awning cost?

Price depends on the size, the shape (curved awnings take more work), the colour and how it attaches to the house. I’m upfront with pricing and give free quotes, so you’ll know the cost before I start.
