On-Site Fabrication vs Shop-Built Panels – What’s the Real Difference?

When homeowners in Kelowna and the Okanagan start researching metal roofing, one question comes up often:

“Does it matter if the panels are fabricated on-site or pre-made in a shop?”

As a Journeyman Architectural Sheet Metal Worker who brings the roll former directly to job sites, here’s my honest take.

The Main Difference

Shop-built panels are manufactured in a factory and shipped to your home in fixed lengths. On-site fabrication means I bring the machine to your property and form the panels right there to the exact lengths needed for your roof.

Why On-Site Fabrication Often Wins

  1. More Precise Fit Every roof has its own unique details — valleys, hips, chimneys, and irregular shapes. Fabricating on-site lets me measure, cut, and form each panel as I go for a much tighter and more accurate fit.
  2. Wider Panels Because I roll the panels on-site, I can make them wider than what is typically practical to ship from a shop. Wider panels mean fewer seams overall and a cleaner, more modern look.
  3. Significantly Less Waste I only roll exactly what’s needed for your roof, which reduces leftover scrap compared to ordering pre-cut panels that often don’t fit perfectly.
  4. Less Handling Damage Pre-made panels can get scratched or dented during shipping and unloading. When I fabricate on-site, the material stays protected longer and is handled more carefully right up to installation.

When Shop-Built Panels Can Still Make Sense

For very small or simple roofs, shop-built panels can work fine. However, for most residential homes in the Okanagan — especially those with complex rooflines — on-site fabrication usually delivers a better overall result.

The Bottom Line

On-site fabrication gives me greater control over panel width, fit, and material usage. It’s one of the main reasons I can deliver a cleaner, better-performing standing seam roof that lasts for decades in our local climate.
